BURLINGTON, Vt. – Seniors Chelsea McNally and Stephanie Johnson each
scored on a header to lead the Western Michigan Broncos past Vermont,
2-0, in the first day of action at the TD Banknorth Classic hosted by
In the season opener for both teams, McNally headed in a corner kick
attempt from Chantal Robinson to put WMU on the board just 2:57 into the
contest. Nine minutes later, Andrea Tyler crossed the ball into the box
from the right wing and Johnson was able to head the ball past UVM
goalkeeper Elana Cockburn (Chestnut Hill, Mass.).
The Catamounts and Broncos played to a 0-0 tie in the second half.
Vermont had a few scoring opportunities in the second stanza but Western
Michigan held off UVM. Kate Perz made two stops in the Broncos’ net to
earn the shutout, while Cockburn registered four saves in the Vermont goal.
In the first game of the day, #1-ranked Notre Dame, the defending
national champions, posted an 11-1 victory over New Hampshire. Reigning
Player of the Year Katie Thorlakson scored twice and handed out three
assists. Freshman Kerri Hanks netted three straight goals for the Irish
and classmate Brittany Bock added a pair of tallies in their first
The Fighting Irish struck first on a goal by Thorlakson at the 12:45
mark. New Hampshire answered back in the 18th minute as Ashlee Cieslak
beat UND goalkeeper Erika Bohn in a one-on-one situation to knot the
score up 1-1. Notre Dame added two more goals in the half to take a 3-1
lead at the break.
In the second half, the Irish rattled off eight unanswered goals to pick
up the victory.
Bohn and Nikki Westfall split time in the Notre Dame net and did not
register a save. Julie Randall posted 11 saves in the New Hampshire goal.
The second day of the TD Banknorth Classic is set for Sunday, August 28
at Centennial Field. New Hampshire takes on Western Michigan at 10:30am
and will be followed by Vermont facing Notre Dame at 12:30pm. Sunday is
Vermont Youth Soccer Day and any youth soccer player can get in free to
the games by wearing their team jersey. The first 100 fans will receive
a free Vermont Soccer T-Shirt.
