This Week In Vermont Athletics August 29 ? September 5

VERMONT STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Senior Emily Fitzgerald (Brewster, N.Y.)
from the field hockey team is the Vermont student-athlete of the week ?
Fitzgerald scored in overtime to guide the Catamounts field hockey team to a
2-1 victory over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon ? The tri-captain picked up
the game-winner 5:52 into the overtime period, with a put back off of a penalty
corner ? The goal was the second of her career ? The win for the Vermont
field hockey team was its first season-opening victory since 1996.

FIELD HOCKEY (1-1, 0-0 America East): The field hockey team opened the 2005
campaign on Saturday with a 2-1 overtime victory over Bucknell on the road ...
Senior tri-captain Emily Fitzgerald (Brewster, N.Y.) scored the game-winner
5:52 into overtime to give Vermont its first victory to open the year since the
1996 season ... Freshman Kari Furlani (Colchester, Vt.) scored the Catamounts
first tally of the season, just 3:10 into her first
collegiate contest ... Furlani was assisted on the play by classmate Megan
Maynard (Waterbury, Vt.) ... Junior Erin Hickey (Campton, N.H.) picked up
the victory in goal for Vermont, making eight saves on the afternoon ... The
Catamounts also fell to Lock Haven on Sunday, 3-0, for their first loss of the
season ... WHO'S NEXT: Vermont travels to Rhode Island this weekend to take on
Providence on Saturday and Brown on Sunday afternoon ... The Catamounts open
the home portion of their schedule on Friday, Sept. 9, when they host Sacred
Heart.

MEN?S SOCCER (0-0, 0-0 America East): Vermont prepped for its season opener
with a pair of exhibition wins last week blanking Division III power St.
Lawrence, 4-0, and the Burlington Bulldogs, a club team from Ontario, 2-0 ...
The Catamounts have 12 newcomers on the roster including 10 freshmen ? The
team?s strength is a veteran backfield led by senior Jesse Brady-Searby
(Petersburgh, N.Y.) and junior Corey Bronner (Morrisville, Vt.). The defenders
led a solid defensive effort against St. Lawrence limiting the Saints to just
three shots, all in the first half ? WHO?S NEXT: Vermont opens its 42nd
season at the 16th annual Nike Fall Soccer Classic at Durham, N.H. ? The
Catamounts play Quinnipiac on Friday, Sept. 2 at 2:00 p.m. and Iona on Sunday,
Sept. 4 at 12:30 p.m. ? The home opener is on Tuesday, Sept. 6 when Vermont
hosts Harvard at Centennial Field at 2:30 p.m. ? Fans who attend the match
with the Crimson will receive $1 off the Vermont Expos game with Tri-City at
7:00 p.m. that evening ? Vermont hosts the 15th annual Smith Barney/Nike
Soccer Classic on Sept. 9-11 with UNH, Army and perennial national power San
Francisco ? Vermont students with a valid ID are admitted free to all
Catamount regular season home games.

WOMEN?S SOCCER (0-2-0, 0-0 America East): The University of Vermont women?s
soccer team opened the 2005 season this past weekend hosting the TD Banknorth
Classic ? The Catamounts dropped a 2-0 decision to Western Michigan in the
first day of action and then faced No. 1 ranked Notre Dame ? The Fighting
Irish earned a 6-0 victory over Vermont ? Several newcomers made their
Catamount debuts this weekend ? Freshmen Emilie Rowe (Rochester, N.Y.), Susie
Cirilli (Wallingford, Pa.) and Erin Pichiotino (Burlington, Vt.) earned a start
in their first career games against Western Michigan ? Classmates Lexie
Kaknes (St. Charles, Ill.) and Kiley Gilbert (Gaithersburg, Md.) also saw time
off the bench against the Broncos ? Gilbert earned the start against Notre
Dame and newcomers Kaitlin Francis (Hinesburg, Vt.) and Michele Mannino
(Colchester, Vt.) entered the game in the second half ? Gilbert and Rowe were
recognized for their outstanding effort on defense as they were named to the TD
Banknorth All-Tournament Team ? WHO?S NEXT: Vermont hosts Marist at 3:00
p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 31 at Centennial Field.
