This Week in Vermont Athletics September 19-26

VERMONT STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Junior Heather Mitchell (Queensbury, N.Y.)
from the women?s cross country team and freshman Lee Stephane Kouadio
(Woodlyn, Pa.) from the men?s soccer team are the Vermont Student-Athletes of
the Week ? Mitchell helped lead the women?s cross country team to a first
place finish in the UMass Triangular for the third time in four years on
Saturday afternoon ? Mitchell covered the 3.1 mile course in a time of 19:19
to finish in third place ? Kouadio scored a pair of goals this weekend at the
Vanderbilt Puma Classic in a pair of losses for the Catamounts ? The two
goals give him a team-high six on the year and he has scored four times in the
last three games.

CROSS COUNTRY: The University of Vermont women?s cross country team won the
UMass Triangular for the third time in four years over the weekend ... The
Catamounts totaled 28 points to beat out Maine (48) and Massachusetts (49) ?
The Vermont men?s team finished third in the team competition (70 points),
behind UMass (27) and Maine (35) ? In the women?s race, Heather Mitchell
(Queensbury, Vt.) and Diana Purtz (Powell, Ohio) finished 3-4 to lead the
Catamounts ? Mitchell covered the 3.1 mile course in a time of 19:19, while
Purtz was clocked at 19:23 ... Senior Tessa Auwarter (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.)
and Cara Moorby (Milton, Vt.) also earned top 10 finishes, placing seventh and
eighth, respectively ? Moorby posted her best time as a Catamount, crossing
the finish line at 19:55 ? Freshman Rachel Taylor (Hampton, N.J.) posted her
best finish of the young season, placing 13th overall (20:35) ? Classmates
Lynette Barnett (Bakersfield, Calif.) and Trista Baye (Green Bay, Wisc.) earned
top 20 finishes, crossing the line in 15th and 18th place, respectively ? In
the men?s race, Morrisville native Brad Allen was the men?s top runner for
the second time this season ? He covered the eight-kilometer course in a time
of 27:21 to take eighth place overall ... Sophomore Chris Healy (Denver, Colo.)
placed 16th with a time of 27:57 and freshman Ben Fletcher (Santa Fe, N.M.)
placed 20th overall (28:23) ? WHO?S NEXT: The Catamounts return to action
on next Saturday (Sept. 24) at the St. Lawrence Invitational in Canton, N.Y.

FIELD HOCKEY (2-6, 0-0 America East): Vermont went 0-2 on the week, falling to
Central Michigan 4-3 in overtime and 5-0 to No. 8 Michigan ... Against Central
Michigan the Catamounts led 2-1 going into the half before having to rally to
send
the game in to overtime with just under four minutes remaining in the contest
... Sophomore Danielle Collins (Walpole, Mass.) scored a goal and handed out an
assist in the contest, while freshman Kari Furlani(Colchester, Vt.) and junior
Nikki Desch (Charlottesville, Va.) each picked up a tally as well ... Desch now
has three goals on the season on three shots ... Senior Merrie-Beth Maynard
(Waterbury Center, Vt. also picked up an assist in the contest, for her second
of the year ... On Sunday eighth-ranked Michigan out shot the Cats 29-8 on its
way to a 5-0 victory ... Junior Erin Hickey (Campton, N.H.) made 17 saves in
goal for Vermont, including a big save on a penalty stroke in the second half
... Sophomore Katie Flynn (Katonah, N.Y.) also had two defensive saves in the
game, giving her a team-high three on the season ... Flynn led Vermont last
year with five defensive saves ... Collins leads Vermont in scoring with three
goals and two assists for eight points on the year ... Collins had scored a
goal in three straight contests before not registering a tally against Michigan
on Sunday ... WHO?S NEXT: Vermont returns to action this week by opening a
four-game home stand against Cornell on Sunday ... The Catamounts then take on
Dartmouth on Sept. 28, before opening America East play versus UMBC on Oct. 1.

MEN?S SOCCER (5-2-0, 0-0-0 America East): Vermont saw its season-opening
winning streak stopped at five games with a pair of defeats at the Vanderbilt
Puma Classic ? The game with Western Kentucky was Vermont?s first overtime
match of the season as the Catamounts lost 2-1 ? On Sunday host Vanderbilt
topped the Catamounts 5-1 ? Freshmen Lee Stephane Kouadio (Woodlyn, Pa.) and
Connor Tobin (Fort Collins, Colo.) were named to the all-tournament team in
Nashville ? Kouadio scored a goal in both games and leads the team with six
on the season. He also has tallied four times in the last three contests ?
Hard-working junior goalkeeper Paul Valente (Coventry, Conn.) made his
collegiate debut in the second half of Friday?s game at Vanderbilt  ? The
Catamounts open a three-game homestand this week. Vermont is unbeaten at 7-0-3
in its last ten home games and has gone 17-2-9 at Centennial Field since late
in the 2001 season ? WHO?S NEXT: Vermont hosts Colgate on Wednesday at 4:00
p.m. and opens America East play taking on Binghamton, Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at
Centennial Field ? The first 100 fans attending the Binghamton game will
receive a free Vermont soccer t-shirt ? It also is Season Ticket Holder and
Sponsor Appreciation Day, and hot dogs are just $1 courtesy of University
Dining Services  ? UVM students with a valid ID as well as all Victory Club
members are admitted free to all Catamount regular season home games.

WOMEN?S SOCCER (3-5-0, 0-0-0 America East): The Catamounts went 1-1 over the
weekend ? Vermont dropped an 8-2 decision at Rhode Island, but bounced back
with a 2-1 victory at UMass ? Junior Amy Cochran (Keene, N.H.) scored both
goals in the win over the Minutewomen and added another against Rhode Island
? The Vermont/UMass match was the first meeting between the two teams since
1994 ? UVM?s win snapped a five-game losing streak to UMass ? It was the
first win over the Minutewomen since 1989 and the first in Amherst for the
Catamounts since 1980 ? Freshman Lexie Kaknes (St. Charles, Ill.) recorded
her first career points as a Catamount with an assists in back-to-back games
versus Rhode Island and UMass ? Junior transfer Laura Kissock (Albuquerque,
N.M.) has started the last three games in net for Vermont ? She made a
career-high nine stops in the victory over UMass and is 2-1-0 on the year ?
She made a total of 15 saves on the week for Vermont ? WHO?S NEXT: The
Catamounts close out a six-game road swing when they return to action on
Sunday, Sept. 25 when they open league play at defending America East Champion
Binghamton in Vestal, N.Y. ? Vermont defeated the Bearcats 1-0 at Centennial
Field last season.

FALL FOLIAGE GOLF TOURNAMENT: Spots are still available in the 2005 Victory Club
Fall Foliage Golf Tournament ? The tournament will be held on Friday, Oct. 7,
2005 at Vermont National Country Club in conjunction with the University of
Vermont?s Homecoming Weekend celebration ? The deadline for entry into the
tournament is Sept. 30, 2005 ? The cost is $175 per play for individuals or
$700 per foursome and includes a bag lunch, giveaway and greens fee ?
Registration for the tournament starts at 9:00 a.m. with a shotgun start at
10:00 a.m. ? A reception will be held following golf at approximately 3:00
