The Vermont Department of Education began a grant-funded pilot project in
2004 around 1:1 Computing. This initiative, now beginning its second
year, is taking place in three Vermont schools.
Those schools (and grades) are:
Glover Community School in Glover, VT (6th, 7th,-and in '06-'07, 8th
Irasburg School in Irasurg, VT (6th, 7th,-and in '06-'07, 8th grade)
and Oak Grove School in Brattleboro, VT (3rd, 4th in '04-'05, 5th, 6th in
'05-'06 to '07)
Much was learned in the first year of this project and all three schools
have made significant strides in making the project a success. While the
schools have always been open to visitors, and did receive a couple in the
first year, they also were grateful to have time to experiment and explore
the new environment that 1:1 computing created in their schools.
This year, those schools are inviting and encouraging educators from
around the state of Vermont to come see what they have learned from the
creation of that 1:1 environment in their schools and classrooms.
Students have become better organized, they have expanded the quality and
quantity of their writing and they have learned valuable skills with
regards to research. Many have moved into multimedia presentations as a
way to demonstrate their learning, and all are discovering what it means
to have access to this valuable tool both at school and at home.
There were certainly "bumps" in the road. All of the teachers and the
principals will tell you about their fears, the issues that they faced,
and the ways that they have dealt with all of them. It has been an
exciting journey so far.
If your school or district is considering 1:1 computing for any level of
your educational program, encourage your district and school leadership,
teachers, and technology professionals to visit the sites involved in this
I will be handling initial calls for the Glover and Irasburg. Please call

We hope to see you at the school sites. This "pilot" project was created
for the purpose of learning all we can about the learning and teaching
that takes place in this unique environment. Bring your team to see how
it can be possible for your own community.
