"If I skied KMart frequently or strongly cared about its future, I'd
consider a campaign of sorts to encourage the resort to rope off the
far sides of some of these McTrails (Double Dipper and Ovation come to
mind first, Superstar is what it is and isnt likely to change). There
is no reason why KMart needs to continue to mow its steep football
fields from edge to edge, especially on trails that get relatively
little skier traffic (last time I checked, Ovation falls into this
category).
The bigger question, perhaps, is when will a ski area besides MadVail
consider regeneration zones as a viable method of tree and snow
conservation?"
Agreed on the latter. Unfortunately, ASC isn't in the business of
taking the long view these days.
I suspect that the widening of the trails is as much related to death by
icemaking cannons as it is due to overzealous mowing. McSnow challenged
shrubs at the edge of windswept football fields don't offer as much
potential for regeneration as the Cantalope chutes or other more
sheltered regeneration zones at MRG.
