AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BURLINGTON VT
511 AM EDT TUE OCT 25 2005

.SYNOPSIS...

...WINTER STORM WATCH EXPANDED TO INCLUDE HIGHER TERRAIN OF THE
NORTHEAST KINGDOM...ESSEX AND CALEDONIA COUNTIES...

...SIGNIFICANT WINTER LIKE STORM AFFECTING THE NORTH COUNTRY
THROUGH WEDNESDAY WITH HEAVY WET SNOW OVER THE HIGHER TERRAIN AND
THREAT OF FLOODING OVER SOUTH CENTRAL VERMONT...

LOW PRESSURE OFF THE MID ATLANTIC COAST WILL TRACK INTO THE GULF
OF ME BY WEDNESDAY THEN EAST OF THE CANADIAN MARITIMES BY THURSDAY.
REMNANTS OF HURRICANE WILMA ARE EXPECTED TO NOT DIRECTLY IMPACT
OUR AREA.

&&

.SHORT TERM (TODAY)...
COMPLEX WEATHER SCENARIO WITH THE PROBLEM OF THE DAY IS WHERE WILL
THE COLD AIR COME FROM TO PRODUCE HEAVY SNOW. SNOW CURRENTLY
FALLING IN WRN NY NW PA IN HIGH TERRAIN NEAR 540 DM LINE. ALL
MODELS CONTINUE TO SHOW FALLING 1000-850 THICKNESSESS AND NEAR
ISOTHERMAL PROFILE PRODUCED BY PRECIPITATION COOLING AND LOWERING
FREEZING LEVELS DURING PERIOD OF HEAVY PRECIPITATION. GFS LACKING
THE TERRAIN RESOLUTION OF THE CHAMPLAIN VALLEY AND GREEN MOUNTAINS
SO DOESNT PRODUCE CHAMP VALLEY CONVERGENCE AND GREEN MTN UPSLOPE
COOLING THAT NAM AND WSETA SHOWS. OPTED TO KEEP THE WATCH UP FOR
VERMONT WHERE STILL LOTS OF UNCERTAINTY ABOUT HOW LOW THE SNOW
LEVELS WILL GET AND HOW MUCH WILL STICK TO OTHER THAN GRASSY AREAS.
HOWEVER THERE IS STILL POTENTIAL THAT CHAMP AND ST LAW VALLEY WILL
CHANGE TO ALL SNOW. WILL REALLY HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE HOW THINGS
EVOLVE TODAY AS MODELS JUST TOO MARGINAL TO BE DEFINITIVE ON WHICH
WAY THINGS WILL GO.

GFS/NAM HAVE DIFFERENCES ON WHERE MESOBANDING LIKELY TO SET UP
AND HAVE BROAD BRUSHED QPF. SATELLITE AND RADAR SUGGEST THE NAM MIGHT HAVE
BETTER DETAILS TODAY WITH DEFORMATION ZONE DEVELOPING OVER WRN
PA/NY AND HEAVY BAND MOVING NORTH FROM SRN NEW ENGLAND. NAM WSETA
SUGGEST SOME PRECIP SHADOW IN NE KINGDOM AS WELL WITH STG ERLY
FLOW ACROSS THE WHITES.

BY TONIGHT...NAM MAY BE DRYING OUT UPPER ICE CRYSTAL PRODUCING (-10C)
LEVEL 15-20K FT TOO MUCH. IF THIS WERE THE CASE...DESPITE COLD
PROFILE...JUST LIGHT SNOW OR DRIZZLE WOULD RESULT. THINK NAM IS
HAVING A HARD TIME WITH UPPER LEVEL CONVECTIVE INSTABILITY LATER
TODAY AND PREFER THE GFS TONIGHT WITH DEEP MOIST PROFILE. MOST
AREAS SHOULD GO OVER TO SNOW EXCEPT CT VALLY REGION.

WEDNESDAY LOTS OF MOISTURE REMAINS AND LIFT TRANSITIONS FROM
SYNOPTIC/MESOBANDING TO OROGRAPHIC BUT WITH MAINLY NORTHERLY
COMPONENT UNTIL THURSDAY A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF UPSLOPE PRECIP IS
NOT LIKELY EXCEPT OVER THE HIGHEST TERRAIN.

LINGERING FLURRIES AND SPRINKLE TO CONTINUE INTO THURSDAY.

&&

.LONG TERM (TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY)...
NO CHANGES TO THE LONG TERM.

&&

.AVIATION...
SKY COND AT ALL SITES WILL DROP DURING FORECAST PERIOD FROM MVFR TO
IFR/LIFR BASED ON VSBY/PRECIP TYPE. RA WILL BE PREDOMINANT AT ALL
SITES THRU 20-22Z BFR CHANGING TO A MIX OF RA/SN AT
KBTV/KMPV/KMSS...AND ALL SN AT KSLK WHERE VSBY DOWN TO LESS THAN 1SM
AT TIMES. WINDS ENE FOR MUCH OF MORNING HRS AND WILL SHIFT TO NNE
BETWEEN 18-00Z. ALL SITES 5 TO 15 KTS W/ SOME BRIEF GUSTS TO 20KTS.
LLWS POSSIBLE AT ALL SITES 30-45KTS WITH KSLK/KMPV SEEING HIR
AMTS.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...
STILL LOOKS LIKE MORE THAN 2 INCHES OF RAIN IS POSSIBLE SO LEFT
FLOOD WATCH GOING. WILL HAVE TO KEEP TABS ON ALL AREAS UNTIL WE
SEE EXACTLY WHERE HEAVIEST RAIN WILL FALL AND WHERE IT IS NOT
DOMINATED IN THE HIGHER TERRAIN BY SNOW. THIS IS MOST LIKELY OVER
SOUTHEAST SECTIONS.

&&

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BURLINGTON VT
950 PM EDT MON OCT 24 2005

.SHORT TERM (REST OF TONIGHT)...
OVERALL FORECAST IN REAL GOOD SHAPE AND ONLY CHANGES NEEDED WERE
BASED ON TIMING OF PRECIPITATION TONIGHT AND OVERNIGHT LOWS. UPPER
LEVEL DIFFLUENCE OVER THE REGION CONTINUES TO ENHANCE
PRECIPITATION SHIELD SOUTH OF THE REGION. THIS WILL EVENTUALLY
MOVE UP ACROSS THE REGION...ESPECIALLY AFTER MIDNIGHT. GOING
FORECAST HAS THIS COVERED WELL. WITH ALL THE CLOUDS OVER THE
REGION...OVERNIGHT LOWS WILL BE RIGHT AROUND CURRENT LEVELS. THUS
WILL NEED TO RAISE TEMPERATURES ABOUT 4 DEGREES ALL AREAS.
REMAINDER OF FORECAST IN REAL GOOD SHAPE...ESPECIALLY WITH
UPCOMING SIGNIFICANT EVENT FOR TUESDAY INTO EARLY WEDNESDAY. WILL
THEREFORE KEEP WINTER STORM WARNINGS/WATCHES IN PLACE AS WELL AS
THE FLOOD WATCH FOR SOUTH CENTRAL VERMONT.

&&

.PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...
(ISSUED 440 PM EDT MON OCT 24 2005)

SHORT TERM (TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT)...
A MAJOR STORM WILL IMPACT THE NORTH COUNTRY TUESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY
WITH POTENTIAL FOR FLOODING...AND HEAVY WET SNOW IN THE HIGHER
TERRAIN. GREATEST CONFIDENCE FOR SIGNIFICANT SNOW (GREATER THAN 6
INCHES) IS IN THE ADIRONDACKS FOR LATE TUES INTO WED AM...SO WINTER
STORM WATCH UPGRADED TO WARNING IN THIS REGION. LOWER CONFIDENCE AND
LATER CHANGEOVER TIME FROM RAIN TO SNOW FOR HIGHER TERRAIN OF
VERMONT...SO WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT. FLOOD WATCH
REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR SOUTH-CENTRAL VERMONT FOR RAINFALL AMOUNTS MAY
EXCEED 2 INCHES.

HAVE LEANED TOWARDS GFS SOLUTION WITH REGARDS TO THIS COMPLEX WX
SYSTEM...MAINLY DUE TO HOW IT RESOLVES THE INTERACTION WITH WILMA. A
DEEPENING UPPER LOW OVER THE OHIO VALLEY WILL RESULT IN DEVELOPMENT
OF SFC LOW ALG MID ATLC CST TONITE. PRESSURE FALLS INDICATING THIS
DEVELOPMENT OCCURRING OVER ERN NORTH CAROLINA. WILMA EXPECTED TO
REMAIN A SEPARATE ENTITY...PASSING EAST OF THE DEVELOPING COASTAL
LOW. SOME MSTR AND ENERGY FROM WILMA AND EVEN ALPHA MAY BECOME
ENTRAINED INTO THE COASTAL SYSTEM HOWEVER...COMPLICATING MATTERS A
BIT. LOW EXPECTED TO DEEPEN AS IT MOVES UP ALG EAST CST TONITE THRU
TUES...MOVG INTO GULF OF MAINE BY WEDNESDAY.

PCPN WILL SPREAD NORTH INTO FA TONITE/EARLY TUES. TEMP PROFILES
SUGGEST PCPN WILL BEGIN AS RAIN IN ALL LOCATIONS. VERY IMPRESSIVE
DYNAMICS INDICATED WITH THIS SYSTEM FOR TUES INTO TUE NITE AS MID
LEVEL LOW EXPECTED TO TRACK ACRS SRN NEW ENG. MODELS DIFFER A BIT AS
TO WHERE THE BEST AND MOST PROLONGED FRONOTOGENSEIS AND RESULTING
BANDED PCPN WILL BE. RAIN WILL CHANGE TO SNOW IN ADRNDKS TUES PM
WITH SEVERAL INCHES ACCUM BY EVEN. CHANGEOVER A BIT LATER OVER HIR
TRRN OF VT. EXPECT A MIX DURING PM WITH CHANGEOVER DURING EVENING.
INCREASING NORTHERLY FLOW AND DYNAMIC COOLING WILL ALLOW FOR
SUFFICIENT COOLING EVEN IN LOWER ELEVATIONS LATER TUES NITE FOR A
MIX WITH OR CHANGEOVER TO SNOW.

QPF OF 1 TO 2 INCHES EXPECTED WITH THIS EVENT...WITH LOCALLY HIR
AMTS ESPECIALLY OVER SC VT WHERE FLOOD WATCHES IN EFFECT. A GOOD
PORTION OF PCPN OVER THE NRN MTNS WILL OCCUR IN FORM OF WET
SNOW...THUS NO FLOOD WATCHES...ALTHO THIS SITUATION WILL NEED TO BE
MONITORED CLOSELY. SNOW TOTALS OF 6 TO 12 INCHES EXPECTED IN
ADRNDKS. MORE UNCERTAINTY IN GREENS OF VT...AS TEMP PROFILES
SUGGEST A MIX PSBL THRU TUES EVENING. SEVERAL INCHES OF SLUSHY WET
SNOW PSBL IN THE VLY LOCATIONS...INCLUDING THE CHMPLN VLY...
LATE TUES NITE/EARLY WED.

AS LOW MOVES EAST AND PASSES SOUTH OF NOVA SCOTIA DURING
WEDNESDAY...EXPECT STEADY PCPN TO TAPER TO SCT SNOW/RAIN SHWRS WITH
SOME ADDED ACCUM PSBL OVER THE HIR TRRN.

LONG TERM (THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY)...
GIVEN CRNT WX SITUATION...HAVE SPENT LIMITED TIME ON LONG TERM
ANALYSIS THIS MORNING/AFTN AND FOLLOWED CLOSELY TO THE HPC GUIDANCE.
SFC HIGH PRES FROM GREAT LAKES MOVES INTO FA BY FRIDAY...AS POTENT
5H ENERGY DROPS INTO THE OHIO VALLEY AND DEVELOPS A CUTOFF MID/UPPER
LVL LOW. STILL LOTS OF QUESTION ABOUT STRONG SFC HIGH...LOCATED
DIRECTLY OVERHEAD OF MID/UPPER LVL LOW. THIS SYSTEM BECOMES CUTOFF
AND SLOWLY DRIFTS INTO THE MID ATLANTIC STATES BY SUNDAY. SEVERAL 5H
VORTS WL ROTATE AROUND SYSTEM AND HELP ENHANCE SFC LOW PRES OFF THE
MID ATLANTIC COAST LINE BY 12Z SUNDAY. STILL SOME QUESTION IF SYSTEM
MOVES NORTHEAST AND IMPACTS OUR FA WITH MORE PRECIP LATE SUNDAY INTO
MONDAY OR IT CONTS A EASTERLY TRACK AND PASSES SOUTH OF LONG ISLAND
BY MONDAY. WL CONT TO FOLLOW CLOSELY TO HPC GUIDANCE AND KEEP FCST
DRY ATTM...BUT SOME PRECIP MIGHT NEED TO BE PLACED IN FA IF MODEL
TRENDS CONT FOR DAYS 6 AND 7. OTHERWISE...PROGGED 85H TEMPS BTWN -6
AND -8C SUPPORT HIGHS ONLY IN THE 40S THURS WITH NEAR 50 POSSIBLE ON
FRIDAY AS LLVL WAA DEVELOPS. THE EXACT TRACK AND ASSOCIATED COOL
POOL WL HAVE IMPACTS ON TEMPS SUNDAY INTO MONDAY...ALONG WITH
CLOUDS/POTENTIAL PRECIP.

AVIATION...(18Z-18Z)
AVIATION CONCERNS ARE LW CIGS TODAY...FOLLOWED BY ADVECTION OF
PRECIP FROM SOUTH TO NORTH ACRS CWA ON TUESDAY AND ASSOCIATED PRECIP
TYPE AT SLK. OBS AND SAT PICS SHOW PLENTY OF CLOUDS ACRS TAF SITES
WITH CIGS BTWN 015-025. WL SHOW A SLIGHT INCREASE IN CIGS THRU THIS
AFTN ASSOCIATED WITH SOME LLVL DRYING AND BUFKIT RH PROFILES
SHOWING SOME DECREASE IN LLVL MOISTURE. OTHERWISE...OMEGA/LIFT
INCREASES AFT 08Z FROM SOUTH TO NORTH ACRS OUR FA ON TUES. WL TEMPO
RAIN BTWN 06-10Z FOR MOST TAF LOCATIONS AND LOWER CIGS TO 015KFT.
BASED ON 7H FGEN FIELDS...VERY STRONG 7H OMEGA FIELDS...AND
IMPRESSIVE Q-VECTOR CONVERGENCE...FEEL HEAVIER AND STEADIER PRECIP
WL DEVELOP ACRS TAF SITES BY 15Z TUESDAY. ALSO...HEAVIEST PRECIP WL
MIX COOL AIR FROM ALOFT TO SFC AND CHANGE RAIN TO SNOW AT
SLK...ESPECIALLY AFT 18Z TUESDAY. WL MENTION 1SM WITH MODERATE
RA/SN AT SLK AFT 16Z WITH CIGS AT OVC005.

&&
