I'd like to put in a plug for keeping the naming system as is. While 
some of the first intial(s)/last name constructions seem clumsy or hard 
to remember, they may actually be easier for people. To use Jon's case, 
as a student I may forget whether my prof's name is Jon, John, Erickson, 
Ericson, etc. but I do know that I can look him up in the UVM directory. 
  I'll know I have the right Erickson because the Directory will provide 
the department name, and it will also give me the correct NetID so there 
will be no confusion about that.

If we use a "pick your own name" system then I have to remember not only 
the person's name but whatever moniker they chose to go by, with no way 
to look that up if I can't remember it.
