SYNOPSIS:
  As part of an international effort to reduce stigma and
discrimination, the sponsor provides grants to journalists to study
selected topics regarding mental health or mental illness. Fellows
are encouraged to select topics that are unique and creative, and
educate the public, raise awareness, and inform other journalists.
They are tailored to suit the needs, interests, and experience of each
fellow. The Carter Center provides resources through its network of
consumer, family, provider, managed care, and government agencies.

OBJECTIVES:
  The fellowships: Increase accurate reporting on mental health
issues and decrease incorrect, stereotypical information; Help
journalists produce high-quality work that reflects an understanding
of mental health issues through exposure to well-established resources
in the field; and Develop better-informed print and broadcast
journalists who can report more accurate information through
newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and the Internet, and
influence their peers to do the same.


ELIGIBILITY
  Eligible applicants must have at least two years of experience in
print or electronic journalism (writing, reporting, editing,
producing, filmmaking).

FUNDING
  Every year, six U.S. fellows are awarded stipends of $10,000 USD
each. In 2006-07, two South African fellows will be awarded R50.000
each. Stipends cover expenses during the fellowship project, including
travel, materials, and other incidental expenses. Fellows also make
two expense-paid visits to The Carter Center in Atlanta. The first
occurs at the beginning of the fellowship year to meet with their
project advisors, and the second occurs at the end of the fellowship
year to present their completed project. Each visit lasts three days.
