BURLINGTON, Vt. – University of Vermont senior Anja Jokela (Shelburne,
Vt.) and freshman Juergen Uhl (Muhlenbach, Germany) both claimed first
place finishes in the Classical Sprint in day one of the Colby Ski
Carnival at Sugarloaf in Carrabassett Valley, Maine, as the Catamounts
finished with 182 points for a first place standing after day one of
competition. A total of nine Vermont nordic skiers had top-20 finishes
on the day.
“I was very pleased with our team,” head nordic coach Allan Serrano
said. “It was a tough race being a 450 meter sprint up hill but we had
a good idea based on some strong training that we would do well. Anja
was number one from start to finish and Marion (Solbjorg), Emilia
(DeMarchis) and Juergen all had good performances.”
In the Women’s Classical Sprint, Jokela came in first place while
freshman Marion Solbjorg (Lillehammer, Norway) was third and Emilia
DeMarchis (Burlington, Vt.) was fourth. Senior Molly Gray (Newbury,
Vt.) picked up a 15th place finish and junior Carina Hamel
(Southampton, Mass.) was 19th.
In the Men’s Classical Sprint, Uhl was the top racer with senior Anders
Osthus (Duluth, Minn.) finishing fourth and senior Ryan Foster (Weston,
Vt.) coming in eighth place.
Vermont’s 182 points ranks ahead of second place Middlebury (157
points) points and third place Dartmouth (156 points).
Vermont’s nordic team competes in the 15k freestyle (women) and 20k
freestyle (men) in day two of the Colby Carnival at Sugarloaf on
Saturday starting at 8:30am. The Vermont alpine team begins competition
tomorrow afternoon after Friday’s competition was delayed because of
poor conditions earlier in the week.
