BURLINGTON, Vt. - The University of Vermont women's nordic team claimed
the top six spots in the 15k freestyle and the women's alpine team had
three top-10 finishes as the Catamounts maintained their first place
lead in day two of the Colby Carnival at Sugarloaf in Carrabassett
Valley, Maine. With 477 points, Vermont remains ahead of second place
Middlebury (473 points) and third place Dartmouth (470 points) heading
into tomorrow's final day of competition with just the giant slalom
remaining.
"There was some really, really tough conditions today," Director of
Skiing and head alpine coach Bill Reichelt said. "The nordic team did
such a great job getting of one through six on the women's side to take
pressure off the alpine team. The women's alpine team had a nice
showing and the men's alpine team was so focused on team scoring they
may have held back a little too much because of the conditions.
Tomorrow they are going to go for it in the giant slalom."
In the women's 15k freestyle junior Carina Hamel (Southampton, Mass.)
led the pack for the Catamounts taking first place. Vermont would also
claim the next five spots with senior Emilia DeMarchis (Burlington,
Vt.) finishing second, senior Anja Jokela (Shelburne, Vt.) placing
third, freshman Marion Solbjorg (Lillehammer, Norway) was fourth,
freshman Katrina Howe (Laconia, N.H.) was fifth and senior captain Kate
Crawford (Hawley, Mass.) finished sixth. Senior assistant captain Molly
Gray (Newbury, Vt.) came in 14th place.
"This was a great showing for us," head nordic coach Allan Serrano
said. "With so many newcomers on the nordic roster, the women's
captains got the team together before the season to talk about the
history and tradition here at Vermont and the they responded to that
today."
Senior captain Anders Osthus (Duluth, Minn.) finished first in the
men's 20k freestyle, while senior Ryan Foster (Weston, Vt.) was 10th
and freshman Juergen Uhl (Muhlenbach, Germany) finished 11th.
In the women's slalom senior tri-captain Jamie Kingsbury (Waitsfield,
Vt.) grabbed a second place finish. Senior Amy Cochran (Keene, N.H.)
followed with a fifth place showing and sophomore Ashley Spina
(Guildhall, Vt.) was sixth.
In the men's slalom senior tri-captain Paul Epstein (Carlisle, Mass.)
took him an 18th place finish.
The alpine team will compete in the giant slalom tomorrow in the final
day of competition at the Colby Carnival starting at 9:30am.
NOTES ? Vermont sophomore Sam Beck (Norwich, Vt.) was initially
disqualified in the slalom but the ruling was overturned and he will be
awarded an eighth place finish. An updated team score and Beck's eighth
place finish will officially be posted tomorrow morning.
