LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – The University of Vermont women’s alpine team took
the top three spots in the giant slalom and sophomore Greg Hardy
(Stratton, Vt.), the defending national champion in the GS, led the
men’s alpine team with a first place finish as the Catamounts finished
in first place in day one of the St. Lawrence Carnival in Lake Placid,
N.Y. The women’s Nordic team added four top-10 finishes in the 5K
classical and the men’s Nordic team had three top-10 finishes in the
10K classical.

Vermont finished with 427 team points to rank ahead of second place
Middlebury (413 points) and third place Dartmouth (357 points).

“Today was a better indication of how the alpine team has been skiing,”
Director of Skiing and head alpine coach, Bill Reichelt said. “It was a
little windy but we showed more of what we are capable of. The Nordic
team continued to be strong and overall we had a solid team effort
today.”

Senior Hilary McCloy (Sunapee, N.H.) followed up her second place
finish in the GS last week in the Colby Carnival with a first place
finish. Sophomore Jilyne McDonald (Bellevue, Wash.) finished in second
place and senior tri-captain Jamie Kingsbury (Waitsfield, Vt.) finished
third to earn her third top-five finish already this season. Senior Amy
Cochran (Keene, N.H.) picked up an 11th place finish.

In the men’s giant slalom Hardy finished first while sophomore Zac
Brown (Sun Valley, Idaho) was eighth and senior tri-captain Paul
Epstein (Carlisle, Mass.) was ninth. Senior Hunter Kaltsas (Stratton
Mountain, Vt.) added a 13th place finish.

In the women’s 5K classical Carina Hamel (Southampton, Mass.) led a
group of four Catamounts that finished in the top-10 with a second
place finish. Freshman Marion Solbjorg (Lillehammer, Norway) was fifth,
Anja Jokela (Shelburne, Vt.) was seventh and captain Kate Crawford
(Hawley, Mass.) finished eighth.

In the men’s 10K classical freshman Juergen Uhl (Muhlenbach, Germany)
finished third, senior captain Anders Osthus (Duluth, Minn.) was fifth
and senior Ryan Foster (Weston, Vt.) was seventh.

The Vermont alpine team finishes up competition tomorrow in the slalom
starting at 9:30am.
