I've seen red-bellied woodpeckers three times now along the Butternut Trail
(I think that's the right name) at Shelburne Farms. I've also seen them on
Whalley Road, which runs off the road to the Charlotte Ferry - right by the 90
degree bend by the apple orchard. I think they're nesting in both areas but I
don't have any proof.
My favorite sighting of this species was at my daughter's house in
Minnetonka, MN. She's had a nesting pair on her property for two years now and they are
amazingly, comically noisy and raucous. I've always been astonished how
non-birders can not notice bird noise, but even the least interested visitor asks my
daughter what on earth is making that noise.
