Vermont Ski Team Competes in Dartmouth Carnival This Weekend

The Vermont ski team returns to action this weekend on Friday, Feb. 10
and Saturday, Feb. 11 in the Dartmouth Ski Carnival. The alpine events
begin at 9:30am on Friday at the Dartmouth Ski Way in Lyme Center, N.H.
Friday’s Nordic events have been moved to the Craftsbury Ski Touring
Center in Craftsbury, Vt., and will start at 10:00am. Vermont has won
all three of the carnivals it has competed in so far this season.
NORDIC RACES MOVED TO CRAFSTBURY, VT. THIS WEEKEND … While the slalom
and giant slalom races for this weekend's Dartmouth Winter Carnival
will be held as scheduled at the Dartmouth Ski Way, recent warm weather
and heavy rains have forced the relocation of Friday's and Saturday's
Nordic events. The men's and women's cross country competition has been
moved to the Craftsbury Ski Touring Center in Craftsbury, Vt., about 90
minutes north of Hanover. The race schedule for Friday, Feb. 10,
includes the men's 20k freestyle at 10:00am, followed by the women's
15k freestyle at 11:30am. Both events will be mass-start races, with
all competitors starting simultaneously. The schedule for Saturday,
Feb. 11, is for the women's 5k classical to start at 10:00am, followed
by the men's 10k classical at 10:45am. For driving directions and more

ALPINE RACES AT DARTMOUTH SKI WAY … This weekend’s alpine races, both
slalom and giant slalom, will be held as scheduled Friday and Saturday
at Dartmouth’s home course at the Dartmouth Ski Way in Lyme Center,
N.H. The giant slalom begins on Friday with the women's first run at
9:30am and the men's first run at 10:30am; second runs begin at 1:00pm.
The men's and women's slalom on Saturday begins with the men's first
run at 9:30am and the women's first run starts 10:30am. Final runs
beginning at 1:00 pm.
LAST TIME OUT … The Vermont ski team picked up its third straight
carnival title of the season winning its home carnival in Stowe, Vt.,
for the 31st time in school history … Vermont finished the weekend with
755 team points ranking ahead of second place Middlebury who finished
with 742 points… Rain during most of the day on Friday made for
difficult conditions at Hayride but sophomore Greg Hardy (Stratton,
Vt.) was unaffected winning the slalom for the second straight week …
Sophomore Zac Brown (Sun Valley, Idaho) had the next best day for the
men’s alpine team finishing 11th in the slalom while sophomore Sam Beck
(Norwich, Vt.) finished 16th and senior Hunter Kaltsas (Stratton
Mountain, Vt.) was 18th … In Friday’s women’s slalom sophomore Jilyne
McDonald (Bellevue, Wash.) had her best run of the season to take first
place … Senior tri-captain Jamie Kingsbury (Waitsfield, Vt.) followed
with a second place finish and senior Amy Cochran (Keene, N.H.)
finished sixth … Earlier in the day on Friday at Trapp Family Lodge in
the women’s 5k classical senior Anja Jokela (Shelburne, Vt.) led a
group of three Catamounts that finished in the top-10 with a second
place finish … Sophomore Carina Hamel (Southampton, Mass.) was seventh
and freshman Marion Solbjorg (Lillehammer, Norway) was ninth … Senior
captain Kate Crawford (Hawley, Mass.) finished 15th … In Friday’s men’s
10K classical freshman Juergen Uhl (Muhlenbach, Germany) led the way
with a third place finish … Senior captain Anders Osthus (Duluth,
Minn.) finished fifth and senior assistant captain Ryan Foster (Weston,
Vt.) was 11th … On Saturday the conditions forced the Nordic relays
scheduled for the morning to be canceled but the alpine racing
continued with the giant slalom … Hardy led the way for the men’s
alpine team once again by winning the giant slalom to earn his fourth
straight victory ... Senior tri-captain Paul Epstein (Carlisle, Mass.)
followed up with his best performance of the year to finish in second
place … Freshman Craig Leaman (Waterville Valley, N.H.) added a 16th
place finish for the Catamounts … Vermont also took the top two spots
in the women’s GS with Kingsbury picking up her third first place
finish of the year … She also has finished in the top-three in all six
of her races this season … McDonald finished second and senior Hilary
McCloy (Sunapee, N.H.) was sixth … Cochran took 10th place.
MCDONALD NAMED VERMONT STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK … Sophomore Jilyne
McDonald was named the UVM female Student-Athlete of the Week for her
performance at the Vermont Ski Carnival in Stowe, Vt., last weekend.
She had her best run of the season to take first place in the slalom
last Friday and followed that up with a second place finish in the
giant slalom in helping lead Vermont to its 31st Vermont Ski Carnival
title in school history. As a freshman McDonald was named an
All-American after finishing sixth in the GS at the 2005 NCAA
Championships.
STOWEFLAKE RECEPTION A SUCCESS … More than 175 people attended last
Saturday’s reception at the Stoweflake Conference Center & Resort in
Stowe, Vt., following the Vermont Ski Carnival. University of Vermont
Alumni Relations and Development would like to thank the Baraw Family
and Hank Lunde of Stowe Mountain Resort for their support with the
event as well as the ski program. UVM would also like to give special
thanks to the Vermont Regional Board and the Events Committee for
helping plan this event. “As always the reception at the Stoweflake Spa
and Resort was a great success,” Director of Skiing and head alpine
coach Bill Reichelt said. “The food was outstanding and it’s always
great to get a chance to meet alumni and friends of UVM skiing. It's a
nice reminder to see how many supporters we have in the area.”
FORMER CATAMOUNT SKIERS IN THE 2006 OLYMPICS … Lowell Bailey ’05, Jimmy
Cochran and Kris Freeman are former Catamount skiers that will be
competing in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. Bailey, a
three-time All-American at Vermont, earned a spot on the US Biathlon
Team. Last season he led the Catamounts to a second place finish in the
NCAA Championships. Cochran, a former standout on the UVM men’s alpine
team, was named to the US Ski Team on Wednesday. Cochran skied for the
Catamounts for just one season in 2003, but earned All-American honors
that year. Freeman, a former Nordic standout, skied for the Catamounts
for one season before moving on to train with the US Ski Team on a
full-time basis. He was named to the US Cross Country Ski Team for the
2006 Games. While at Vermont, he earned All-America honors at the NCAA
Championships in 2000 and competed in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt
Lake City. The 2006 Winter Olympic Games run from February 10 to
February 26 and NBC will carry much of the action on its family of
networks (NBC affiliate, MSNBC, CNBC, USA).
FORMER UVM SKIERS COACHING IN THE 2006 OLYMPICS … Three Vermont
graduates will also be in Torino as coaches for the US Ski Team. Johno
McBride ’88 is the head speed coach for the US Ski Team, while Jesse
Hunt ’90 is the alpine director for the squad. Hunt was a two-time
All-American at Vermont. Trond Nystad, inducted into the UVM Athletic
Hall of Fame two years ago, will serve as the head cross-country coach
for the US Ski Team. He won the NCAA Championship in the 20K classical
in 1992, leading Vermont to the national championship that year. Nystad
was also a three-time All-American during his Nordic career.
ALL-AMERICANS … Last season the Catamounts had seven All-Americans:
Lowell Bailey ’05 (Nordic), Amy Cochran (alpine), Paul Epstein
(alpine), Ethan Foster ‘05 (Nordic), Greg Hardy (alpine), Jilyne
McDonald (alpine) and Jamie Kingsbury (alpine). Vermont has had a total
of 278 All-Americans in its ski history.
HEAD OF THE CLASS … The Vermont ski team has six student-athletes on
the 2006 roster that were named NCAA Academic All-Americans last
season: Amy Cochran, Kate Crawford, Emilia DeMarchis, Molly Gray, Anja
Jokela and Hilary McCloy all earned the honor.
NCAA SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS … This year’s NCAA Ski Championships are in
Steamboat, Colo., on March 9-12. The NCAA’s were last in Steamboat in
1993 and the Catamounts took home a second place finish that year.
WHO’S NEXT … Following this weekend’s Dartmouth Carnival the Catamounts
return to action next week in the Williams Carnival on Friday, Feb. 17
and Saturday, Feb. 18 at Jiminy Peak.
BUS WITH US … The Vermont athletic department is sponsoring a bus trip
to the men’s hockey games at UMass-Lowell on March 3 and 4. The cost is
$150 (single), $210 (double), $275 (triple) and $335 (quad) and
includes the cost of the hotel, game tickets for both nights and lunch
from Handy's Lunch on the ride down. The bus will leave from the
