LYME CENTER, N.H. – Sophomore Greg Hardy (Stratton, Vt.) won his fifth
race of the season taking first place in the men’s slalom and senior
Hilary McCloy (Sunapee, N.H.) won the women’s slalom as Vermont
continued its dominance on the EISA circuit by winning the Dartmouth
Ski Carnival. The Catamounts have won all four of their carnivals this
year and finished the weekend with 815 points. Second place Middlebury
finished with 788 points and Dartmouth was third with 747 points.
“We’re still really improving in all quadrants and as a group we’re
gaining a lot of momentum,” Director of Skiing and head alpine coach
Bill Reichelt said. “We still have some key people we need to be more
consistent but we are heading in the right direction. What’s been great
is the team depth which has been vital and it has given everyone on the
team confidence”
Hardy bounced back from yesterday’s 11th place finish in the GS by
winning his fifth race in six tries with a victory in the slalom.
Sophomore Zac Brown (Sun Valley, Idaho) contributed his best race of
the season taking third place. The newest addition to the alpine team
Ethan Korpi grabbed a sixth place finish.
In the women’s slalom McCloy won her second race of the season and
senior tri-captain Jamie Kingsbury (Waitsfield, Vt.) finished in third
place.
In the Nordic events at the Craftsbury Touring Center in Craftsbury,
Vt., senior Anja Jokela (Shelburne, Vt.) finished second in the women’s
5k classical and freshman Marion Solbjorg (Lillehammer, Norway) was
fourth. Senior captain Kate Crawford (Hawley, Mass.) finished in eighth
place, senior Molly Gray (Newbury, Vt.) was 11th and freshman Katrina
Howe (Laconia, N.H.) took 20th.
In the men’s 10k classical Vermont took two of the top three spots with
freshman Juergen Uhl (Muhlenbach, Germany) finishing second and senior
Anders Osthus (Duluth, Minn.) taking third. Senior Ryan Foster (Weston,
Vt.) finished sixth and freshman Anders Folleras (Lillehammer, Norway)
was ninth.
Vermont returns to action next weekend in the Williams Carnival at
Jiminy Peak starting on Friday, Feb. 17.
NOTES … Earlier today in the Winter Olympics in Cesana, Italy, former
Catamount Lowell Bailey ’05 finished 27th in the men’s 20k biathlon. It
was his best ever finish in an international competition.
