I took my now daily drive to East Warren Store about 9:30 - Snowy the owl was sitting on his favorite perch, the compost pile. He seemed very content, in spite of the woman playing with her puppy in the yard next door. I was the only birder there, someone had been there earlier and had kept his/her distance.
As I walked around the small cemetery on the east side of the store, I hear a familiar call and turned around to see a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker in one of the big trees in back of me. It's a first for the season for me and totally unexpected! As I returned home, I spotted a Northern Shrike in a tree about 1/2 mile south of the Warren/Waitsfield town line and watched it fly from one tree to another on the west side of East Warren Rd. It was being mobbed by a group of brave or foolish chickadees!
Yard birds this morning include a large flock of Common Redpolls, 6 Dark-eyed Juncoes, and 4 Wild Turkeys.
