House Budget Committee Adopts Budget - Rejects $7 Billion Amendment

Earlier today we sent out an Alert about a House floor amendment anticipated to be offered by Rep. Mike Castle (DE) to add $7 billion to the Labor, Health and Human Services, Edcuation budget line.  As you can tell from the information below, Rep. Rosa DeLauro (CT offered this amendment in the Committee and it was defeated.  This makes it all the more important to let your Representatives know how important the Castle Amendement is to his/her constituents with disabilities.  Ask 
them to support the Castle Amendement when the Budget Resolution is voted on in the House.

Deep Cuts to Domestic Discretionary Spending

It is reported Chairman Nussle's resolution would set discretionary spending at the President's recommended level - $873 billion.  A level this low would result in deep cuts to discretionary programs not related to defense or homeland security.  Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) offered an amendment to boost discretionary spending for health programs, education, and workforce training.  The amendment (which is similar to the Specter-Harkin amendment passed in the Senate earlier this month) failed on a party line vote 22 to 14.
