On my way to run errands about town this morning I was treated to a
close up view of perhaps 100 Bohemian Waxwings (Meadow's Edge
Development, Essex). They were consuming the last of the dried crab
apples which are still in abundance. A handful of Robins were foraging
on the ground underneath. Thrilled to see a flock this big I didn't
think it could get much better.
Wrong! Near Tafts Corner I observed a pair (M/F) of Pileated
Woodpeckers making two HUGE cavities in the dead trunk of a maple.
The birds were so intent on their work that they didn't pay me any
mind. The tree they were working is right in front of Overhead Door
just a few feet off Williston Rd with traffic constantly whizzing by.
Pulling into the OD driveway I was able to watch them with binocs.
Four hours later I came past the same location and the female was still
at work still unfazed by all the activity.
