A Northern Shrike was atop a tall tree in my yard this morning. A small bird flew into the tree. Since it was a distance away and it was quite active, I thought it might be a kinglet...but it turned out to be very agitated chickadee. The shrike paid no attention.
Over the past 2 weeks, we have had 2 small icicles on our maple tree. Chickadees have been drinking from it each day. No other birds have done so. We have a year-round spring flowing into a small pond 50 feet away, so water is always available to the birds. I suspect there is sweet sap as a reward for this drinking behavior. Also, in the winter, chickadees will fly under the lip of my hot-tub cover to get warm water that is condensing, rather than drink the cold spring water like the other birds. Some smart birds!
