Today was a nice calm day to be out on the South Hero and Colchester
Causeways, enjoying the duck show so nicely described and detailed in
Murin & Pfeiffer. Reports of the Tufted Duck pair motivated our first
visit there, but the day's only disappointment was not locating them
(despite checking just about every duck, with visiting birder Ed).
The vast majority of all ducks were on the north side - primarily Scaup
sp. (mostly Greater), Ringed-necks, Common Goldeneyes and Common
Mergansers. Also sighted were at least 3 Barrow's Goldeneyes, and at
least 4 Redheads. Surprisingly, we saw only 1 Bufflehead.
Lots of Canada Geese passed overhead, including one little flock of 8
which included 4 Snow Geese. Roughly halfway out from Colchester, we
were treated to splendid views of a Pileated Woodpecker (sorry, no
video), and a SNOW BUNTING in nearly breeding plumage.
