Thanks to Scott Schwenk for providing directions to the South Hero end of
the Causeway, which is a new approach to this area for me. Indeed, the Tufted
Ducks (male and female) were there, swimming amid 50 or so scaup about 50
yards offshore. The 30-40 mph wind actually enhanced the visualization of their
tufts. And I saw a single male Barrow's goldeneye, swimming in the open water
on the north side of the Causeway, as previously reported by Alan Strong. The
larger group of scaup reported by Alan were further out in the water, beyond
my ability to identify any other species.
The ice is breaking up earlier than usual, it seems. Enjoy the duck show
while it lasts.
