No apologies ....I feel your frustration!!! It is certanly possible
that it isn't a bird at all. Did you listen to the Saw Whet owl? It
isn't a hoot'e call at all. I certainly remember hearing the most
blood curdling night calls when I lived in Windsor, MA, enough to make
your liver quiver. Windsor was high elevation and lots of forest. I
never did figure out what it was but am pretty sure that it was a mammal
of some sort.
Now I know I heard SOMETHING with a piercing cry calling. When I go to
the Cornell "All about Birds" tapes, I can't say it sounds quite the
same as either the woodcock or the nighthawk. Not owl-like at all.
Sounded more like a raptor cry, but why would I hear that it 10
something PM? There was a very bright headlight beaming toward our
property from a parking lot up the road, and maybe something got stirred
up. I give up! Any other ideas?
