Wednesday: The local six-member gang of Crows have
been enjoying an old pumpkin that I halved and set out
for the squirrels to clean up. For dessert they
thoroughly worked over the Robins' leaf patch. Later
I saw them queuing up for a go at a rotten maple
branch, politely taking turns to dig deep inside - for
ants maybe? 30ft up in the air so I can't see for
Lone Redpoll at the feeder with many Goldfinches
(beginning to change color). Also a single Mourning
Dove doing wing stretches on the ground. Six Canadas
heading north just over the tree tops, don't usually
see big flocks in the spring so these must be "local".
Ice isn't off Dunmore & Fern Lakes yet tho.
Shelagh Smith in Leicester.
