AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BURLINGTON VT
317 AM EST SUN MAR 19 2006

.SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
MORE WINTRY WX ON TAP FOR THE NORTH COUNTRY AS UPPER LOW PRESSURE
WHICH HAD REMAINED TO OUR EAST OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF DAYS...WILL
WORK SE OVER THE FA TDY/TNGT. NW WINDS COMBINED WITH DEEP LL
MOISTURE WILL ALLOW MUCH OF THE CWA TO SEE ACCUM SNOWFALL. UPSLOPE
EFFECTS IN THE DACKS(3-6") AND NW VT FACING SLOPES AND NC VT(3-7")
WILL SEE HIGHEST SNOW TOTALS. SOME OF THESE TOTALS COULD BE HIGH
AND HAVE ISSUED A SNOW ADV FOR THESE AREAS AS A RESULT. SYNOPTIC
SETUP FAVORS AFFECTED AREAS IN VT VERSUS THE DACKS SO WILL HAVE
HIGHLIGHTED THE POTENTIAL FOR LOCALLY HIR AMTS. AREA RADAR ALREADY
SHOWING -SW IN N NY. SNOWFALL WILL ABATE FROM FROM TO EAST AS SYSTEM
MVS OFFSHORE. ANOTHER SYSTEM GETS SENT WESTWARD AROUND HUGE UPPER
CIRCULATION LATE MON INTO TUES...KEEPING REGION UNDER N/NW FLOW
RIGHT INTO MIDWEEK...SO WILL CONTINUE MENTION OF -SW IN ZONES DURING
THIS TIME. WENT CLOSE TO GUIDANCE TEMPS WITH A FEW TWEAKS DOWNWARD
BASED ON PREV HIGHS AND CONTINUANCE OF CLD COVER AND FOR POTENTIAL
-SW BASED ON NORTHERLY WIND COMPONENT DURING THIS TIMEFRAME.
&&

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
NO CHANGES MADE TO THIS PORTION OF FORECAST.
&&

.AVIATION...
SKIES EXPECTED TO REMAIN CLOUDY THROUGH THE FORECAST PERIOD.
PREVAILING CEILINGS EXPECTED TO BE AROUND 3500 FT...BUT WILL OCNLY
LOWER TO MVFR RANGE. CLOSED UPPER LOW DESCENDING SOUTH ACRS FA
TODAY INTO TONIGHT WILL RESULT IN AN INCREASE IN SNOW SHOWER
ACTIVITY. PREVAILING VSBYS WILL BE VFR THIS MORNING WITH TEMPO MVFR
IN SNOW SHOWERS. WIDESPREAD SNOW SHWRS EXPECTED 17Z THRU 06Z WITH
PREVAILING VSBYS MVFR OCNLY LOWERING TO IFR.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BURLINGTON VT
1023 PM EST SAT MAR 18 2006

.SHORT TERM /REST OF TONIGHT/...
WEAK VORT AXIS AND SFC CONVERGENCE AS WEAK TROF WAS MVG THRU CAUSED
-SN ON VT SIDE OF CHMPL VLY AND WRN SLOPES OF GREENS AS WELL. I MADE
ERLR UPDATE TO ACCOMODATE AS WELL AS SWITCH AXIS INTO WRN GREENS BY
MIDNGT AND THIS STL LOOKS GOOD AS WNDS WERE SHIFTING WNW ON VT
SIDE OF CHMPL VLY.

&&

.AVIATION...
MAINLY VFR/MVFR CONDITIONS THROUGH SUNDAY AFTERNOON. SNOW SHOWERS
WILL CONTINUE ACROSS NORTHERN NEW YORK...WITH CEILINGS DROPPING TO
3000-3500 FT BY 04Z AND VISIBILITIES IN THE 3-5SM RANGE. THESE
CONDITIONS WILL THEN PREVAIL THROUGHOUT THE FORECAST PERIOD. IN
VERMONT...A FEW SNOW SHOWERS NOW AFFECTING KBTV...BUT EXPECT THOSE
TO END BY 04Z. AFTERWARD...SKIES WILL REMAIN OVERCAST 3500-4500 FT
AND VISIBILITIES UNRESTRICTED. SNOW SHOWERS WILL MOVE INTO KBTV AND
KMPV BY 17Z SUNDAY...BUT EXPECT CONDITIONS TO REMAIN VFR. WINDS WILL
BE LIGHT OUT OF THE WEST OR NORTHWEST...WITH SOME GUSTS TO 20 KTS AT
KMSS SUNDAY AFTERNOON.

.PREV DISCUSSION...
 /ISSUED 422 PM EST SAT MAR 18 2006/

SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
TIRESOME BLOCKED UPR AIR PATN PERSISTS FROM EASTERN NOAM TO
ICELAND. MUCH BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES...MORE CONSISTENT WITH EARLY
FEBRUARY AND MID WINTER WILL CONTINUE. OFF AND ON SNOWSHOWERS WITH
MOSTLY MINOR ACCUMULATIONS...CENTERED ON AREAS OF MOUNTAIN
UPSLOPE...WILL CONTINUE FOR AT LEAST A FEW MORE DAYS.

COLD CLOSED UPR LOW IS ONLY SLOWLY RETROGRESSIVE IN EASTERN CANADA
WILL SPIN AT LEAST ONE MORE S/WV SWRD ACROSS THE FCST AREA FROM
SUNDAY AFTN THRU SUNDAY NIGHT...INCREASING DEEPER MSTR AND
INCREASING POPS AND COVERAGE OF ACCUMULATING UPSLOPE SNOWFALL. WITH
STEADY THERMAL ADVECTION...AND PERSISTENT INVERSION AT ABOUT 6-8K
FT...EXPECT MINIMAL VERTICAL MOTION EXCEPT FOR OROGRAPHIC LIFT.
SNOWFALL AMOUNTS WILL RANGE FROM A DUSTING IN THE VLYS TO A TOTAL OF
2-4 INCHES NWRN SLOPES OF NRN GREEN MTNS AND ADIRONDACKS OVER A 24
HOUR PERIOD ENDING MONDAY MRNG.

H8 TEMPS CONTINUE VERY COLD AT -16 TO -18C...SO WILL CONTINUE PATN
OF MAX TEMPS AROUND 15 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. MAV MOS TEMP GUIDANCE
CONTINUESTO BE TOO WARM...SO DEPENDED HEAVILY ON PERSISTENCE AND
SIGNIFICANTLY COLDER FWC TEMPERATURE GUIDANCE.

SOME SLIGHT IMPROVEMENT IS POSSIBLE ON MONDAY...BEHIND THE H5 S/WV.
PARTIAL SUNSHINE AND A FEW DEGREES OF TEMPERATURE MODERATION ARE
POSSIBLE. ANY PRECIP MONDAY SHOULD DIMINISH TO FLURRIES OVER JUST
THE HIGHER TERRAIN.

UNLESS RETROGRESSION OF UPR LOW IS GREATER THAN FORECAST INTO
CENTRAL CANADA...IT APPEARS THE MOISTURE-LADEN CLOSED UPR LOW
EJECTING FROM THE SOUTHWESTERN U.S. WILL HAVE MINIMAL CHANCES OF
PHASING WITH HIGHER LATITUDE TROFINESS...AND WILL INSTEAD BE
STEERED EASTWARD TO THE SOUTH OF THE FCST AREA FROM THE OH VLY THRU
THE MID ATLC STATES DURING THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK.

LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
PREVAILING -NAO WITH DOWNSTREAM HIGH LATITUDE BLOCKING VCNTY
ICELAND/SERN GREENLAND WILL RELAX DURING THE EXTENDED FORECAST
PERIOD. ALL AVAILABLE GUIDANCE...INCLUDING 00Z ECMWF...12Z
UKMET...AND OPERATIONAL/ENSEMBLE GFS RUNS INDICATE GRADUAL
RETROGRESSION/WEAKENING OF THE 500MB RIDGE NEAR SERN
GREENLAND/ICELAND BEGINNING 00Z TUESDAY. THE RIDGE ENDS UP OVER
CENTRAL QUEBEC ON OR NEAR 00Z SATURDAY. THUS...A GRADUAL TREND FROM
THE PERSISTENT BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES TO NEAR NORMAL TEMPERATURES
/HIGHS AROUND 40F/ IS LIKELY BY LATE IN THE WORK WEEK. WHILE NO
SIGNIFICANT PRECIPITATION SYSTEMS ARE EXPECTED...THE MEAN UPPER LOW
POSITIONED NEAR NEW BRUNSWICK AND ASSOCIATED SHORTWAVE TROUGHS
INVOLVED IN THE CYCLONIC CIRCULATION WILL CONTINUE TO BE A FACTOR IN
OUR WX TUESDAY THROUGH EARLY THURSDAY. INDICATES ARE THAT THE LAST
VESTIGE OF THE CLOSED UPPER LOW MIGRATES SWD THROUGH THE FORECAST
AREA WEDNESDAY...AND HAVE PLACED HIGHEST POPS IN THE GRIDS /RANGING
FROM 40-50 PERCENT/ BETWEEN 22/06Z AND 22/23Z. THIS WILL BE WORDED
AS A CHANCE OF SNOW SHOWERS IN THE ZONES. COULD SEE MINOR SNOW
ACCUMULATIONS IN THE VLYS AND SEVERAL INCHES IN THE MTNS/NWLY
OROGRAPHIC AREAS...PENDING EVOLUTION OF THIS UPPER LOW. THE UPPER
LOW SHOULD ALSO KEEP TO OUR SOUTH A MIGRATORY UPPER TROUGH MOVING
EAST FROM THE MID MS RIVER VALLEY LATE TUESDAY. THIS WILL CONTINUE
TO BE MONITORED...HOWEVER...PRESENT INDICATIONS ARE THAT THIS SYSTEM
WILL TRACK WELL SOUTH THRU THE MID-ATLANTIC STATES WEDNESDAY MORNING
AND NOT DIRECTLY IMPACT WX OVER THE NORTH COUNTRY.

AVIATION...18Z-18Z
OVERCAST CONDITIONS WITH CEILINGS RANGING FROM 3500-4500 FEET
PREVAIL THIS AFTERNOON. SUCH CONDITIONS SHOULD REMAIN IN PLACE
THROUGHOUT THE FORECAST PERIOD AS MODERATELY STRONG TEMPERATURE
INVERSION ABOVE THIS LEVEL MINIMIZES VERTICAL MIXING. OCCASIONAL
MVFR CONDITIONS ARE FORECAST IN LIGHT SNOW SHOWER ACTIVITY THIS
AFTERNOON...AND TEMPO GROUPS ARE IN PLACE TO REFLECT THIS. WILL
MONITOR TRENDS TO SEE IF ANY EXTENSION OF OCCASIONAL MVFR
CONDITIONS WILL BE NEEDED INTO THIS EVENING. TONIGHT...FLURRIES ARE
POSSIBLE...BUT SHOULD NOT RESTRICT VSBYS AND HAVE LEFT OUT OF THE
TAFS. THE LARGE...DECAYING SYNOPTIC-SCALE LOW PRESSURE AREA OVER
W-CENTRAL QUEBEC AT 19Z WILL BRING ADDITIONAL PREVAILING SNOW
SHOWERS TOWARD SUNDAY AFTERNOON AS IT PIVOTS SWD AND MOVES INTO
NORTHERN NEW ENGLAND. WINDS SHOULD NOT POSE ANY SIGNIFICANT
PROBLEM...REMAINING WLY TO NWLY AT 5-15 KT WITH OCCASIONAL GUSTS
18-20KT DURING THE REMAINDER OF THIS AFTERNOON AND AFTER 15Z SUNDAY.
