Susan,
About the only way MVP could cause failure is if the valve leaflets themselves are flail. This is typical caused by acute mitral chordae rupture due to severe MR. Acute problems of this nature can lead very quickly (minutes perhaps) to left and then eventually right sided failure because, depending on the completeness of the rupture, the LV just cannot generate any significant systemic pressure. But in this specific case, left sided failure occurs first, followed in fairly short order by right sided failure. No references for you, just experience talking. I've only seen 3-4 cases in my time. Try Googling "mitral chordae rupture" .
Hope that helps...

Hi,=20
=20
When I was first trained, I was told that three things cause right sided
heart failure: CHF, A-Fib and Mitral Valve Prolapse.
=20
Most sources confirm the CHF and A-Fib but no one else ever talks about
MVP. Is this something that any of you can confirm and if so, do you
pay attention to it? Any references?
=20
Thanks for any responses.=20
