We are using an access database.  We print the labels on a very sticky
label with a barcode on it.  If students manage to get the labels off,
we just print another one based on the serial number in the database. 
There is software that runs on a PC (It has the unfortunate title of
"bartender") that links to the access database.  We haven't actually
used the barcode reader much yet but expect we may in the future.  We
are also looking at moving the database from Access (yuck) to MYSQL at
some point in the future.  We looked at RDIF tags which would be a great
solution but the cost at this point was prohibitive.

Don't know about scanning assessments?

Are any of you tracking inventory by barcode. If so what are you  
using to do so?
Is anyone using a scanning solution to score local assessments? If so 

what one? Does it work well?
