Hi All,
                We have had Baltimore (Northern?)  Orioles  nest in the big 
Eastern Cottonwood in front of the Knoll Farm farmhouse since I have been on 
the farm (May 1957).   The last few years, a pair has built a nest in a 
near-by maple but always within fifty feet of the house. They come every 
year between May 5 and 9th and we listen to the male sing and watch the nest 
being built and the youngsters fledge.

            It has never even occured to us to put out food for them. One 
year there was 6" of snow in mid-May. I saw the orioles scratching and 
feeding on the ground in the apple orchard.  They survived and raised a 
family in the cottonwood.
                    I don't quite understand why there is a need to put out 
food for these adaptable birds.
