This is in answer to several queries.
I was biking on Middle Road in Swanton. If you turn up Janes Road off RT 36 (shore), and left on Middle, you pass a housing area, then open field and farms. I was biking along the road. I must have startled them, because I saw the male flying away. Not a great look at the head. However, he reminded me of an oriole who'd traded orange for brilliant yellow. Blackbird/oriole sized. Definite contrast, black and yellow. Not hidden, the way red-wing epaulets are.
Female stayed on the telephone wire for another minute. Brown, with chest patch fanning from dull yellow to bronze. Had that tapered look to the head.
I could be wrong, but they weren't goldfinches (too big, wrong color for female), and not another oriole (color, range, female), unless there are yellow variants? Not meadowlark (no stripes, etc.).
The land is probably private, but I did see them roadside, much like red-wings.
