Though I am on Mount Desert Island, Maine, not Vermont, all these birds and resonances are found in VT. Bragden Preserve is a Nature Conservancy property near where I am staying. I regularly send off poems to a few friends, but ya gotta be a birder to get the nuances in this one. Although this is an unusual post, I believe it is well within the guidelines of the list.
George Lisi ~
Late afternoon at Bragden Preserve
There! high in the spruces
spiralling up the scale
a Veery reversed, Swainson's Thrush
nearby in the regen, 'weeta-weeta-wit-chew'!
dendroica of the painted face,
of yellow deep and bright
lightning streaked by jet,
and surprising, far from hardwoods,
a Scarlet Tanager carolling throatily
bright as Christmas on the breast of the Holly-dark woods
