Dear VTLepsters:
If you're not yet motivated to chase butterflies, this ought to do it:
http://www.vinsweb.org/vbs/erorlaet.html
Now that the rain has stopped, the field season can shift into gear. We've
got lots of work to do. Kent and I regret to report that owing to
circumstances beyond our control the updated VBS data won't make its debut
until next week. So, alas, we can't yet tell you what's been seen or
vouchered in each VBS block. This information will be important because
we're urging folks to visit under-surveyed blocks this year. So please stay
tuned for that.
In the meantime, if you've been keeping track of what you've vouchered in
your own blocks, by all means get out this weekend for any early-flying
species you might have missed (or simply to enjoy butterflies). Here's what
I saw today in Washington County (10 species):
Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes)
Canadian Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio canadensis)
Cabbage White (Pieris rapae)
Mustard White (Pieris napi)
Clouded Sulphur (Colias philodice)
Eastern Pine Elfin (Callophrys niphon)
Brown Elfin (Callophrys augustinus)
"Spring" Azure (Celestrina sp.)
Silvery Blue (Glaucopsyche lygdamus)
Gray Comma (Polygonia progne)
Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis antiopa)
We'll let you know as soon as the VBS data is available. We'll also be
sending folks who need them voucher cards and glassine envelopes next week.
Thanks again.
Best regards,
Bryan Pfeiffer and Kent McFarland
