VERMONT BREEDING BIRD ATLAS POSTING
For those not on VTBIRD. Now to find a hummingbird nest!
Some really great confirmations of breeding for some species that I
hear but seldom see. What a thirill. Note comments below. Really
Location: Merck Forest, Rupert Block: W. Rupert6
Observation date: 6/12/06 Monday
Notes: VBBA survey, Rogers Rd. E. Rupert 65 and partly sunny. First no
rain day in 34 out of 38! Defoliation bad; friendly flies BAD! No

Blue-headed Vireo 1 Carrying food for yg. First heard bird

frantically chasing cowbird.

White-breasted Nuthatch 11 Yes 11! Two family groups of
begging young - 3 with adults and 4 with adults. One of the ONLY
advantages of the excessive defoliation.
Brown Creeper 2 Pair carrying sm. moths to nest about 40' up in a
8" dead maple. Much of the bark was gone. Birds were flying
into/under a piece of bark hanging 3-4" off trunk. WOW. Again in a
very heavily defoliated area. So it was easy to watch the adults
hunting and returning to nest.
Winter Wren 3 That's 2 babies and one adult which,
interestingly, were in area where singing was heard. I heard tiny
begging call of baby. So cute with about a 1/4" tail sticking up.

American Robin X Young birds on forest floor....
Gray Catbird X
European Starling X
Cedar Waxwing 1 Building a nest in ornamental tree right next to
front door of house about 8' up.

in a clump of ferns - right next to Winter Wrens.

Dark-eyed Junco 2 One of pair seen had a very black and white
streaked breast, but gray head, throat, back, etc. Any ideas about
plumage variation here? Behavior didn't indicate a young.

Indigo Bunting X
Red-winged Blackbird X
Common Grackle X
