Yesterday evening (July 3) while fishing from our kayak in Winona Lake near
Bristol, my wife and I saw and heard a pair of Sandhill Cranes. The birds
made there trumpeting call as they flew up and out of the large marsh on the
south west margin of the lake (~5:30 - 6pm). Then they flew north out of
sight. I may have heard one or two more calls later that evening but could
not be sure, which made me wonder if they came back or if there were others.
This pond and its marshes have some other nice birds too. There are lots of
Virginia Rails and American Bitterns (although yesterday I didn't hear
them), Snipe, and a pair of Osprey with a nest. Followed a mink for about 20
minutes as it hunted the shoreline.
Oh yeah, as we paddled in, as it was getting dark, we saw a tern foraging
around us on the lake. I didn't have my binoculars so I can't say for sure
what sp. It appeared mostly white, black cap, and its tail was not
distinctly forked. It also seemed a little on the larger size.
