Bicknell's Thrush Survey Hike; August Post-Breeding Season
Friday, August 11th, there will be a hike to the top of Killington to
study the population of Bicknell's thrush that breeds around the summit.
For those interested in hiking:
Warning: the hike is not for everybody. It is highly recommended that
you be in excellent physical condition if you intend to travel by trail,
due to the nature of the hike.
To get to the meeting point, at the base of the trail:
From Rutland, follow route 4 east approximately 4 miles till you reach
Wheelerville road. Turn right on Wheelerville and follow it
approximately 4 miles to Brewer's Corner, a parking area on the left
where you will see two trailheads. If you pass a large pond on your
right in front of a house, you have gone too far.
We will meet at the parking area at 7:00 am on Friday June 23rd and
start hiking at 7:15am. The first part is fairly easy, but the second
half is brutal. Pack lightly, you'll thank yourself later. Pack your own
lunch for this trip. It takes about 2.5 hours to reach the summit, so we
should be there at about 9:45 am.
This trip will have an overnight option for those interested. This will
be a whole weekend trip, with us getting down at about 2:30 pm on Sunday
For those who aren't up for the hiking, there will be a gondola option.
The gondola will take you right to the summit. For those taking the
gondola up, be at the base of the K1 gondola at 10:00am on Friday,
Saturday, or Sunday, depending on which days you can make it for. The
gondola does charge a fee of $8.00.
