If you're not doing file sharing, you might consider one of the
Google Office tools. I'm familiar with Notebook, and yesterday Hope
was mentioning that she was developing a blog entry on Writerly, a
shared writing space.
I'm not sure what type of password protection (read, write, etc) you
were looking for. But if you don't mind possible public reading, but
want to require login for registration, wikispaces is pretty nice
http://www.wikispaces.com/
http://www.google.com/groups/ - works best with a google account (free)
http://www.yahoogroups.com/ - works best with a yahoo account (free)
More classical options are things like:
http://www.webex.com/ - online "small business office" about $40 a
month.
http://www.eroom.net/ -
http://www.teamworkzone.com/
If all of your members are Macintosh users, .Mac has nice desktop
integration.
