As per prior conversations on the list i have been playing with ethereal
and some other network monitors. Since Ethereal seemed to be used by
several of the list members I thought I would pass this info along.
Recently Ethereal got renamed to Wireshark. Apparently the same people
are working on the project, but now if you want any updates or support you
have to go to http://www.wireshark.org/.
Along the same lines, If there is anybody who is good at understanding the
output of ethereal please help. I know how to set it up using a hub on
our network, and I get data, but I am having trouble trying to figure out
the good from the bad, and locating potential problems.
I am also playing with an earlier version of Network Probe
(http://www.objectplanet.com/probe/), one that they posted before they
started charging $$ for it.
P.S. Todd Ponto, I took your advice and looked at Nagios, but It was
taking me too much time to get it running in linux, so I gave up and
focused my energy on ethereal/wireshark.
