When I worked at Highgate Elementary, we applied for and received a free
color laser printer (Xerox - wax based), through their Free Color
Printer program. You have to apply and tell them approximately how many
pages you would print per month. The only commitments were that you
needed to print out and fax them a report once a month which listed
usage (total pages, black coverage, color coverage, etc). If you didn't
mail in the report, or if you didn't meet your minimum monthly printing
commitment (you can print anything, it doesn't need to be color), you
were charged $75 for the month. At the time, they provided all the
black ink for free, though I don't see that they still do this. We used
this to print our school yearbook, but also let classes print
(especially black and white) to it to help us achieve our commitment.
The contract is for 3 years, then the printer is yours to keep.
One major drawback is that they required a credit card be kept of file
by them. They would automatically charge this card if you didn't hold
up your end of the bargain.
I think we only paid the $75 twice. Basically, we had a color laser
printer for $150 including all the black ink.

We have an HP color laserjet 3800dtn that works pretty well. We also
recently purchased as part of an overall copier purchase, Xerox 2424
Copier/Printer/Scanner. It will scan to PDFs. I don't know what it
would cost but if its close, you get a lot of options. It uses a wax
based toner. If you are interested, let me know and I can get you more
information about it.

I have an HP color LaserJet 2600n that's about 1.5 years old.
Recently,
the print quality has seriously declined. The pages are "dirty" and
generally not great quality. I have used the toolbox to clean and
recalibrate. I've also run a "demag" paper through it. If you own one
of
these, it this common? Do you have any advice as to how to improve the
print quality? I would also take suggestions on a new HP color laser
model.
Thanks,
