Ted Murin and I ventured out on the Colchester causeway from the South Hero
side. A big flock of birds (2000-3000) has settled into this
area...probably about 2/3 C. Goldeneye, and 1/3 scaup (more Greater than
Lesser, but lots of both species).
Highlights:
1 male Tufted Duck
3 Canvasbacks
2 Redheads
28 Ring-necked Ducks
(Despite intense scrutiny, no Barrow's Goldeneye)
As with last year, the Tufted Duck seemed to stay fairly close to the
causeway, and was generally in the company of Ring-necks.
Warning: there has been no plowing on the approach to the causeway, so its
a long, rough slog out to duck viewing areas. Snowshoes or skis would ease
the journey.
