Two long days of searching through the duck factory off Allen Point
finally yielded a TUFTED DUCK. Dwight Cargill and I trudged through the
snow yesterday at first light only to be frustrated by the fog which
perfectly obscured the ducks. Today we tried again and were rewarded
after more than an hour of searching, with one Tufted duck. The
strategy that worked for me to sort through the ducks was to look at all
the ring-necks (disregard everything else), one by one, until I found
the TUDU. Besides the tuft, the sides of this bird are much whiter than
the Ring-necks and the bill is not pied. Kudos to Allen and Ted for
finding this guy in the crowd. Another hour went by and no luck in
finding the Redheads or Canvasbacks, but we did turn up one drake
Barrow's Goldeneye.
Our tally:
1 Mallard

200+ Greater Scaup
2+ Lesser Scaup
300+ Common Goldeneye
1 BARROW's GOLDENEYE

Good Birding,
Terry & Dwight
