On my way home from working in St. J. today, I swung by Hardwick Lake and saw
11 Ring-neck Ducks (8 male, 3 female)
1 Wood Duck (male)
1 Common Loon
1 Osprey (soaring and hovering over the water)
Also saw and heard Redwings and BC Chickadees
At the little pond on Route 14 at the Hardwick/Craftsbury town line was another Common Loon.
On Elligo, still mostly covered with punky thin ice, were 10 Common Mergansers (only one male). Some were sitting on the ice, and others were swimming in a little channel of water. Periodically one or more would hop off the ice to swim or hop back onto the ice to sit. A couple of Am Crows were walking around on the ice.
Home now, I'm hearing our first Yellow-bellied Sapsucker of the season.
