Last night the first bear returned and tore down the hanging feeders at
our mother's house in Westmore.
We actually anticipated it's arrival and over the weekend we took down
our big platform feeder and decided to keep our cylinder thistle and
sunflower feeders up right outside the kitchen for all our regulars. It
was sad to see the Evening Grosbeaks land on the top of the pole where
the platform feeder had been- so we scattered some seed on the ground for
them as well for all the sparrows. It was only last year when we first
had bear problems and it has been a big disappointment for us not to
enjoy at such close range a feeder full of Rose-breasted and Evening
Grosbeaks, toss in a few Purple Finches, Red breasted Nuthatches and even
Blue Jays at the same time that every spring we looked forward to see. At
least the bears have not been interested in our hummingbird feeders!
