Running services.msc from the run prompt and disabling Auto Updates Service

You observations are dead on with the rest of the Internet community.
This bug affects both non-managed computers that have activated
"Microsoft Update" (in contrast to "Windows Update"), and managed
computers that use a central "WSUS" server (but only when the WSUS
server is pushing updates to Microsoft Office).
There were a number of MS Office updates released this week, so so those
clients that are configured to receive Office updates automatically are
getting slammed. Ben's suggestion should help. Other recommended
work-arounds are to disable Microsoft Update in favor of Windows Update
(which only will be effective for non-managed clients), or to install an
update to the Windows Update agent. I am working on this last approach,
and will keep the community informed as progress is made.
