My understanding has always been that we can connect as many computers as we
want to (and we DO), but Adelphia/Comcast "does not support networking."
What this means is that if there is significant trouble they (tech support)
will tell you to bypass all routers & switches and just plug one machine
into the modem for troubleshooting. In six years I have only had to do this
once. Their responsibility ends at the modem, and the LAN is our problem! In
that regard, how are we any different (except in scale) then the average
home network?
I have always been honest with them about the fact that we are a school
running a network, and even mail/web servers on the connection. No-one
balks, but then again I am in contact mostly with 1st level tech support and
not anyone in Corporate. Even with the most recent issues (port blocking
including SMTP/25 on all residential connections) there was no hesitation
helping me get what I needed.
