I created a shutdown script in active directory that is a batch file that
runs the following:
delprof /q /i /d:30
(deletes profiles that haven't been used in 30 days, without prompting for
confirmation)
We have so many kids using some machines, like in the library, that we run
out of disk space eventually with all the profiles created, we can't wait
for year end to clean them out. So I clean them out 30 days after last
use. That's plenty long enough so that if a kid uses a machine regularly,
he can customize his desktop or whatever, but gets rid of profiles for
folks who have left, or just use a machine rarely. Also, I have a script
that shuts many machines off at day's end, like 3:30 in my lab or 4:30 in
the library. This saves energy, and now I know the shutdown script will
run at a time of day that won't annoy anyone if it takes a while.
I gotta say, finding the right time to do some of these maintenance tasks
is a real challenge in a shool. With the laptops in the carts especially,
the kids want them to boot, and shut down, in the least amount of time
possible, so if you try to automate patch delivery, virus updates,
software installation, figuring out when and how to do it so you don't
leave kids waiting 5 minutes for the machine to be ready to use is a
non-trivial task.
As to electronic portfolios, I'm all for them, but the files need to be on
a server, not on individual workstations, so this doesn't really affect
deleting profiles. If we were gonna go this route, and we haven't yet, I
think I'd set up directories where students had write privileges, but not
delete privs, and tell them to think of that portfolo directory as a
permanent record. Only put there what you want to be there forever.
