Nuance concerning my old friend Steve Smale. It is true, as you
say, that he was a major leader of radical protest at Berkeley
for a while-- organizing "Vietnam Day" with Jerry Rubin and
others. Smale cautioned his friends in the 1980s that they
should no longer consider hima radical. Make of this what you
will. Smale, unlike Rubin and a lot of others, changed his
stance without retracting his respect and friendly feelings
toward his former comrades in the movement.
