All I know from research on IVC filters, is that there has been a
trend for development and use of temporary or removable filters, and
these are the only one which are eventually removed when risk factors
are proven to have decreased or disapeared. There are still permanent
filters put in place for some patients.
I want to venture that these previously mentioned temporary filters
are used when either other treatments are contraindicated (such as
anticoagulation) and/or when PE has been documented, but risk factors
are just in some ways transient.
