Student Research Position (PhD scholarship),
Applied & Analytical Paleontology
Mainz, Germany
The Department of Paleontology, Institute of Geosciences at the
University of Mainz (Germany) invites applications for a 6-month,
fully funded student research position. During this period, the
successful candidate will be expected to prepare an application for
PhD-level funding, including his/her salary for the duration of the
program (usually not exceeding three years). The application will be
sent to one of the major German research foundations.
The research program should complement the existing expertise of the
INCREMENTS research group (www.increments.de and
www.paleontology.uni-mainz.de). Possible research fields may include,
but are not limited to, (1) paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental
reconstructions using biogenic hard parts, (2) numerical analysis of
biometric data, (3) biomineralization or (4) calibration and
development of climate proxies.
Broadly-trained applicants must hold a diploma or equivalent degree,
preferably in bio- or geosciences. In addition to scientific
independence, the ideal candidate should demonstrate originality of
the research focus and excellence in communication skills.
Proficiency in written and spoken English is indispensable, and a
basic understanding of German desirable. Salary according to 50% E13
TV-L (approx. 1000 ? net income, depending on marital status and
number of children) includes fringe benefits. Starting date is
negotiable, but no later than November 1, 2007.
