There are many high risk groups, particuarly in the pediatric population, that will benefit from monitoring IMT so that clinicians can modify their risk factors and help prevent early cardiovascular or cerebrovascular events. I am seeing kids with obesity, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, kidney disease all with increased IMT (I am talking greater than 0.8 mm) that are at great risk for events in their 20s or 30s.
I am not necessarily a proponent of screening programs in the general popluation, but, prevention and risk modification in the proper setting with the appropriate risk groups may go a long way in preventing stroke and heart disease in young adults.
