See notes below-- I've had some -really- good Green Heron pictures
this week, and probably some of the nicest loon pictures I've ever
taken, despite the poor light. A note-- in the green heron feeding
pictures:

I'm not sure exactly what the bird is feeding on; I was surprised to
see that it was something with legs-- Cyndi suggested it might be a
dragonfly larva, which makes sense to me.
It just got me thinking about how little I know about what waterbirds
eat. I've seen a green heron eat a small fish before, but I'd always
just assumed they eat fish like Great Blues, but I've also seen great
blues eat smaller non-fish things.
I just thought that was interesting that I was so surprised by what a
Green Heron would eat, after all this time I've spent watching them.
My one other note is that I've set up a rating system on the web site
so anyone who wants to can give a picture a rating (1-5 stars). I
love to get feedback from people as to which pictures are the best,
so please feel free to make ratings as you look at the pictures.
Okay, on to the photos:

I'm not sure what this green heron is feeding on; I was surprised to
see something that looked insectoid; I had just assumed it would be a
worm of some sort. [Sun, Aug 12, 2007, Allen Brothers Marsh,

This pair of common loons was just hanging out quietly and feeding on
the lake. They gave us lots of opportunities to photograph which was
nice, because the light at the time was rather poor. [Sat, Aug 11,

I have taken lots of pictures of green herons as of late, but I'm
particularly happy with this shot-- I never seem to get good pictures
of the birds in flight, but this shot of the bird landing in the
water was a real treat for me. [Wed, Aug 8, 2007, Allen Brothers
