From across the neighbor's hayfield early this a.m. spotted three poults (no adults visible) searching for food in the newly turned windrows. Though they were at least 200' away, they quickly became aware of me and my dog, and melted away into the woods.
When I passed through later in the afternoon, the haymakers had cleared off the windrows, and the haywagon was nearly filled with bales. This is bad news for the turkeys and crows because the close-shorn field now has little cover left to keep in moisture and harbor insects and grubs, etc.
