A goldfinch nest with three young (5-day-old young) in a dogwood shrub,
survived the 75-90mph wind, horizontal torrential rain, AND hail of Aug 16th!
The surrounding sedge and grass habitat was completely flattened by the storm.
Missing, when I did the nest-check on Sunday, was the tent caterpillar
webbing that had adjoined the goldfinch nest for two weeks; but the
finches, not the storm, may have already removed the web and its worms.
The last Cliff Swallow young are about ready to fledge.
New migrant on shore today -- BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER.
