That sounds about very close to what I have here. It is built in the feeder
I described that is attached to the wall of my porch within 12 inches of our
front door, safely placed under a roof away from the elements (except the
heat). And it is definitely a hermit thrush. We have come within two inches of
it on several occasions! Plus, as you well know, a phoebe nest is constructed
in a very unique and identifiable manner quite unlike that of any thrushes.
It's quite a treat, but I still feel that by avoiding the use of our door,
we are hopefully increasing the likelihood that this nesting may be successf
ul. She flies off the nest (and egg(s)) every time we enter or exit, and that
can't be good. A hassle, for sure, but seems worth it.
